DIRECTOR, ANTENNAS AND INTEGRATED ELECTRONICS, CRC (April 1983-
Present)
Responsibility and authority
for Research group of 17-27 professional and technical researchers and 10-15 graduate
students with budget of @ $4.0 M per annum. Included project teams in Microwave Integrated
Circuit, Antenna and Digital IC Component R&D.
Responsible for forecasting microelectronics and
antenna requirements for emerging communications, radar and satellite systems, initiating
advanced research and stimulating industrial and university activity in these areas.
Sat on national committees including NSERC Advisory
Committee on University/Industry Grants, DIRP Advisory Committee, Semiconductor Working
Group, S&T Committee on Alternate Delivery Mechanisms. Member of NSERC Research Grants
Selection Committee in Communications and Electromagnetics from 1993-1996.
Achievements
Established national R&D
initiatives in several areas including Miniature Hybrid MICs, high speed digital ICs,
multichip modules, integrated phased arrays, neural networks for signal identification,
SiGe for microwave components and application of high temperature superconductors to
microwave circuits.
Proposed and negotiated several national
collaborative R&D projects including: MMIC based satellite phased arrays, optical beam
forming networks for phased arrays, MHMIC Consortium, Microwave Landing System Phased
Arrays, and MMIC Foundry Access Program for industry development.
Proposed and established R&D partnerships with
the Alberta Research Council, Alberta Microelectronics Centre, ComDev, Microtel Pacific
Research, SPAR Aerospace and several Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs), with the
Centre Nationale d'Etudes des Telecommunications in France , and the Electronics and
Telecommunications Research Institute in Korea.
