Workshop Goal:

Which Wireless Technologies will have a Financial IMPACT on the Wireless Industry in 2004 and beyond, as the wireless industry recovers from the worst downturn in recent history?

The Wall Street Community has its view of the Wireless Industry and Wireless Industry Leaders have their views - more than likely these views are not in agreement.

The movement towards W-CDMA, HSDPA, SDR, WiFi, WiMAX, China, etc. etc. are creating paradigm shifts in the entire wireless industry - from the service providers all the way down the supply chain.

The GOAL of this workshop is to bring the  financial community together with wireless industry and supply chain leaders (from the TRENCHES) -- to share "real" data and exchange "real" points of view and try to reach a common understanding of current and future markets and deployments of various segments and technologies of the wireless industry.

We don't expect many to agree -- but that is how we can all learn from each other.

Topics planned to be discussed

  • Wireless Service Providers

    • What are the rollout plans for W-CDMA in North America, Europe and Asia?

      • What financial impact will these rollout plans have on the infrastructure and handset equipment manufacturers, worldwide?

    • What effect will HSDPA, WiMAX and WiFi have on future high speed data networks?

    • What effect will SDR have on the business models of Service Providers in the future?

  • Handset Industry

    • Who are the front runners now, and in the future?  (OEMs, EMSs, ODMs)

    • What role will EMSs and ODMs play in the future?

    • Will  hardware or software drive the future handset market?

    • What are the cost drivers and opportunities for future 3G (and beyond) handset hardware cost reductions?

    • Power management opportunities for future handsets?

    • Moores Law vs RF -- what technologies will impact future RF hardware

    • What will be needed from handset makers to share backward compatible networks?

    • There seems to be a mismatch between handset makers and wireless internet device views and the views of the financial community – what are the applications which will drive these future handsets?

    • How will the market drive the technology, rather than the technology drive the market? It is clear the China market will dominate in the near future.

      • What will this do to the historical suppliers of handsets?  Will China develop its own suppliers?

    • What financial  impact will the new Ecological Regulations have?

  • Base Station and Infrastructure Industry

    • HSDPA

      • Timeline

      • Backward compatibility to W-CDMA

      • Cost compared to W-CDMA

    • Software Defined Radios (SDR)

      • What is the business case for SDR in the base station, infrastructure and handset markets and who are the potential players?

      • What are the technologies which will benefit from an SDR development?

      • How will the emergence of Software Defined Radios affect deployment of new terminals? Is a one "model fits all" scenario possible and if so, how will this affect service differentiation and tower and facility sharing?

    • "Smart Antennas" deployment plans - Great promise, not much happening??

  • Short Range Radio Industry

    • Does the world need ~20 different standards?

    • Which standards will win - lose, why and when?

    • Carrier vs enterprise deployment plans?

  • Electronic Manufacturing Services (EMS) Industry

    • Trends in the EMS business for the wireless industry?

    • How will the EMS industry help wireless OEMs save time and money?

    • How will the EMS industry help the Service Providers in the future (branded vs unbranded products)?

    • Will the EMSs take on an even greater role in future manufacture and distribution of equipment? Will they begin to displace the OEMs?
