WORKSHOP BACKGROUND

Broadband services are rapidly being deployed worldwide with some countries such as South Korea already reporting as much as 73% adoption. Others such as the US and Canada have already reached the 20-30% penetration level.

Delivery of such services by Ku and Ka-Band Satellite VSATs (Very Small Aperture Terminals) is an attractive option particularly where the deployment of terrestrial systems is not already widespread or fully implemented. However, for VSATs to offer an attractive and competitive option, the total cost of ownership—CAPEX and OPEX—must be minimized.

There appears to be an increasing readiness to move towards standards based solutions, and the most notable, DVB-RCS, DOCSIS and IPoS systems are being deployed.

The challenge is for there to be industry agreement on the tradeoffs between standards, performance, total cost of ownership and markets.

This workshop is designed to bring the whole supply chain together to address these tradeoffs and attempt to identify a meaningful path forward.

WORKSHOP GOAL

IWPC, its members and hosts will explore the technology and applications for broadband satellite systems, equipment and services.

The GOAL of this workshop is to:

Give insight and understanding of broadband service delivery by VSAT

and

To explore options for reducing the cost and increasing the competitiveness of such terminals and services.

and

To explore the relative roles of the various players in the VSAT Supply chain.

VSAT OEM VIEWS

  • What will the economics be from the perspectives of the OEMs?

  • How will the OEMs adopt the technology- from outside suppliers or only proprietary internal development?

  • What are the critical design aspects of the Indoor and Outdoor units?

  • What would terminal OEMs like to see the satellite operators do that would allow cost reduction?

  • How do the terminal manufacturers design to minimize installation and maintenance costs?

  • What do the OEMs see as possible tradeoffs between service provider OPEX reduction versus CAPEX investment?

  • What components or technologies do the OEMs see as critical to cost reduction?

  • How can satcom terminals profit by other technologies?

  • What are the options, consequences and implications of Fixed vs.  Transportable vs. Mobile solutions?

  • What criteria do VSAT OEMs use to specify system performance?

  • What are the views of VSAT OEMs towards the various standards and frequency regulations and their impacts on terminals design?

Some VSAT terminal parameters/issues to be covered:

  • Life Cycle costs

  • Maintenance Issues

  • Performance and Coverage Requirements

  • Growth Potential

  • Conversion Issues

  • Installation Constraints- Is self installation a viable alternative?

  • Power Requirements

  • Conversion Options

  • Testing and Conformance
