Introduction

With fourth generation LTE (4G) now beginning to be deployed widely around the world, Fifth generation (5G) mobile and wireless communication technologies are emerging into research fields. New services, applications and devices will drive requirements on data rate, ubiquity of data services, latency, cost and reliability and further drive data traffic growth. Networks, services and devices will be more heterogeneous and machine-to-machine (M2M) applications will connect billions of devices to the internet. Therefore, compared with 4G communication systems, significantly higher wireless transmission rates are expected in 5G communication systems.

To meet the above challenges, 5G mobile and wireless communication systems will require a mix of new system concepts to boost spectral efficiency, energy efficiency and the network design, such as massive MIMO technologies, green communications, cooperative communications and heterogeneous wireless networks. We expect to explore the prospects and challenges of 5G mobile and wireless communication systems combining all of the above new designs and technologies. It is important to recognize revolutionary technology elements and more evolutionary approaches which both will lead to 5G.

Workshop Goals

  • Identify new service and business opportunities which fifth generation mobile networks could enable
  • Provide a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art in technology and theory for “5G Wireless Communication Systems” considering inputs from the complete eco-system and value chain
  • Present a holistic view of research challenges and opportunities in the emerging area of 5G mobile and wireless communications
  • Explore disruptive technologies with the potential to provide a step function in mobile network performance
