Introduction
5G mobile networks are projected to rapidly evolve to virtualized, multi-vendor, ultra-dense heterogeneous networks underpinned next generation transport. 5G Radio Access Networks will leverage V-RAN in DAS, small cell, and macrocell networks to shift basestation functionality to “off the shelf” (COTS) servers in data centers to potentially simplify network management and operations. In-building and in-venue wireless scenarios are expected to be at the forefront of these new architectural initiatives, where RF distribution systems for these wireless deployments are evolving rapidly, building on top of and extending existing C-RAN topologies. This workshop will consider these architectural shifts and examine the impact on small cell, DAS and other licensed and license free technologies.
Workshop Goals
• Explore when and how 5G will be deployed indoors
• Explore 5G indoor network topology, fronthaul transport, spectrum and signal propagation, and antenna design
• Assess 5G’s ability to improve availability and performance indoors for enterprise users
• Consider 5G sub 6GHz and mmWave versus WiFi6
• Understand while mmWave offers incredibly fast speeds and very low latency, will the limited coverage and inability to penetrate obstacles increase cost and complexity of deployment?
• Discuss challenges in buildings and venues where the signal propagation characteristics demand innovative antenna and signal processing innovation match throughput demand
• Question if generation fronthaul transport protocols coupled with baseband decomposition into real-time and non-real time functions will support the evolution to 5G RAN
