Non-Terrestrial Networks

Introduction
Initiatives are now underway to address how satellites can augment global 5G roll-out, with the enhanced connectivity delivering more than just faster streaming and quicker downloads on mobile devices. According to a new research report from specialist IoT analyst firm Berg Insight, the global satellite IoT subsciber base is to reach 23.9 million by 2027. Only 10 percent of the Earth's surface has access to terrestrial connectivity services which leaves a massive opportunity for satellite communications. Satellite connectivity provides a complement to terrestrial cellular and non-cellular networks in remote locations. New initiatives are now betting on the IoT connectivity market. Many initiatives are based on low-earth orbit nano satellite concepts. While some rely on proprietary satellite connectivity technologes to support IoT devices, several are starting to leverage terrestrial wireless IoT connectivity technologies. Collaborations between satellite operators and mobile operators that explore new hybrid satellite-terrestrial connectivity opportunities will become common in the next years.
Workshop Goals
- Considering device options, direct-to-device (D2D) and 3GPP evolution, link design- delay, doppler and how to address these
- Assessing satellite design- EIRP, G/T, Power and how to get it launched; link budgets, new losses (scintillation), channel models, body loss and margin
- Exploring spectrum (L&S band licensed satellite spectrum vs. reuse of terrestrial spectrum, as well as the associated regulatory and interference concerns)
- Exploring network and antenna evolution, innocation and accessories
- Designing Best-In-Class Next Generation Telco Cloud enabling 3GPP 5G Advanced and NTN
